Ethelyn Churchwell

Robbins, NC

I'm Ethelyn, the owner of BossMare Equine. My expertise is in western performance horses and breeding programs. I don't just study this side of the industry, I live it. I run my own breeding program and do my own reproductive work, so nutrition is not a separate subject for me. It's woven into every stage, from the broodmare and the in-utero foal to the performance horse in full work.

That hands-on experience shapes how I advise. I work with what's real, not just what looks good on paper. I want to know your horse, your goals, and your program before I make a recommendation, because the right nutrition plan depends on all three. My approach is practical and honest. If something isn't a fit, I'll tell you.

The goal is always a sound, well-fueled horse and an owner who understands the why behind the plan. I'm happiest working with breeding programs and western performance horses. We show in cow horse and ranch classes, and we breed for those same disciplines. Whether you're feeding a futurity prospect, a broodmare, or a using horse on the ranch, I'd love to help you build a program that fits the horse in front of you.

Testimonials

β€œI’ve been working with Ethelyn for more than five years, and she has been an incredible help in managing my metabolic, insulin-resistant mare. After my mare’s firstβ€”and thankfully onlyβ€”laminitic episode, I knew I needed an expert, and finding Ethelyn made all the difference.

Ethelyn has always been immediately responsive and supportive in every way. From recommending the best supplements to providing hay testing and detailed analysis, her knowledge has been invaluable. She not only answers my texts and questions, but also takes the time to teach me along the way.

I truly cannot recommend Ethelyn highly enough. Thanks to her guidance and expertise, my mare is thriving at 17.”

β€œI am so thankful for the nutrition guidance provided by Ethelyn Churchwell. Our 24 year old gelding suffers from leaky gut syndrome and we were really struggling to find the right feed and supplements to best support him. With Ethelyn’s vast knowledge of vitamins, minerals and forage types we found the correct balance and he’s never looked better.

I appreciate that she continues to hone her skills and expand her knowledge to provide the best support possible. She considers the whole horse from hoof to ear and nose to tail. Our relationship is truly an ongoing partnership that ensures our horses are healthy and happy.”
— Jess Stanley
β€œWorking with Ethelyn has been invaluable for my breeding and foaling program. Managing broodmares, pregnant mares, nursing mares, foals, and young growing horses means their nutritional needs are constantly changing, and having someone knowledgeable to turn to has made a huge difference.

Over the years, I’ve reached out to Ethelyn with questions about everything from body condition, weight management, and forage programs to digestive issues, developmental concerns in young horses, and how to best support mares through pregnancy and lactation. She has always been willing to listen, explain the β€œwhy” behind her recommendations, and help me develop a plan that makes sense for each individual horse.

What I appreciate most is that her guidance is never one-size-fits-all. She takes the time to look at the whole horse, the situation, and the goals, then helps me make informed decisions. Her knowledge, patience, and willingness to educate have given me confidence when navigating nutritional challenges and making adjustments to my program.

I’m grateful to have Ethelyn as a resource and highly recommend her to anyone looking for practical, knowledgeable guidance in equine nutrition.”

β€œI cannot recommend Ethelyn Churchwell enough! She has been absolutely wonderful to work with for my horses, Gunner and Stitch. Gunner is a senior horse at 28 years old, and Stitch is a yearling at just 14 months, so they have very different nutritional needs. Her knowledge of equine nutrition and dedication to each horse’s individual requirements are truly exceptional. She took the time to thoroughly evaluate both horses and create feeding plans tailored specifically to them.

I especially appreciate her use of Bluebonnet Feeds products. The quality of the Bluebonnet program, combined with Ethelyn’s expertise and attention to detail, has made a noticeable difference in my horses’ overall condition, health, and well-being. Both Gunner and Stitch are thriving, and I feel confident knowing they are receiving the best nutritional support possible.

Ethelyn is incredibly responsive, caring, and genuinely invested in the success and health of the horses she works with. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and compassionate equine nutritionist, I highly recommend Ethelyn Churchwell and the Bluebonnet Feeds program. I am so grateful for her guidance and support!”
